Gear House Windsor has partnered with Canadian Arts Productions Inc. and The Windsor Endowment for the Arts (WEA) to present the first annual ROSE CITY FILM COMPETITION to celebrate, encourage and award emerging filmmakers in Southwestern Ontario.

The purpose of the competition is to motivate emerging filmmakers to create a short film to add to their portfolios and to apply the techniques they learned in film school to the real world.

General Information

Who is Eligible to Enter?

Any secondary or post-secondary student over the age of 18 who is currently enrolled in school in Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, and London-Middlesex.

If you choose to work with a team, all members of the film crew must be enrolled in school in one of the four counties. The exception applies to any actors or actresses you may choose to have in your film.

What Type of Film to Enter?

A short film, under one (1) minute in length, with an emphasis on storytelling.

EXAMPLE: This 30-second public service announcement took home the silver medal in 2013 from the Television Bureau of Canada, and helped the Windsor Residence for Young Men (WRYM) purchase a home and establish a safe haven for vulnerable young men in the City of Windsor.

What can You Win?

  • First Place Winner: $800 cash prize and a medal

  • Second Place Winner: $500 cash prize and a medal

  • Third Place Winner: $200 cash prize and a medal

  • Other film-related gifts such as discounts on film equipment rentals and classes will be distributed to finalists

What is the Deadline for Submissions?

The deadline for film submissions is Sunday, August 28th, 2022 at 11:59 PM

When is the Awards Ceremony?


The Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 15th, 2022 at 7:00 PM on the 2nd floor Dance Hall, at Shō Art Studios located at 628 Monmouth Road in Windsor, Ontario. It is within walking distance of the Via Rail Train Station.

All competition finalists are encouraged to attend but it is not mandatory to receive the prize money or other film-related prizes.

Submission Process

We are pleased to welcome your submission to the ROSE CITY FILM COMPETITION.

We reserve the right to reject any submission that does not meet the eligibility requirements, so it is strongly advised you review and understand the eligibility requirements before proceeding.

Submissions will be accepted from Monday, May 2nd to Sunday, August 28th, 2022 at 11:59 PM.

The Jury

All film submissions will be adjudicated by a five (5) member jury panel made up of industry professionals from the City of Windsor. The identity of the jurors will be made public at the Awards Ceremony.

The jury will judge the films based on the following criteria:

  • Storytelling

  • Emotional appeal

  • Message/Take away

  • Cinematography

  • Lighting/sound

  • Bonus points for originality and creativity

All decisions by the jury are final.

Confidentiality

Personal information submitted by the applicants and discussions pertaining to the applicants’ submissions are held in strict confidentiality.
